Beyond the Universe: The Bill Pearl Story (Bill Pearl with Kim Shott)

Frankly, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on this book. Bill Pearl’s biography and a history of bodybuilding. Wow! Every bodybuilder worth his salt will want to read Bill’s story, in his own words. From 1953, when he won the Mr. America contest, until he came out of retirement at 41 to challenge the world--a year in advance--at the 1971 NABBA Professional Mr. Universe in England (he won, of course), Bill Pearl was arguably the best bodybuilder in the world. What’s more, as Clarence wrote in RIPPED: “He’s a great man…For all the countless autographs he’s signed, for each fan, as far as Bill’s concerned, it’s the first time.” Everyone who knows Bill loves him.

“This book goes far beyond the usual ‘schmaltzy’ and ‘humdrum’ bodybuilding autobiography,” writes George Coates, who’s known Bill since the start of his bodybuilding career. “Not just another ‘sets and reps’ publication, this is the story of Bill Pearl’s personal journey through life, in which he reveals himself as a well-rounded, talented, intelligent man who was never just a ‘muscle head’…and he has more stories to tell than the brothers Grimm. What is constant throughout is his love for the Iron Game and his sadness at some of the changes that have manifested themselves over the years.”

Yes, we can verify that Bill speaks his mind.

Bill Pearl/Dave Draper Seminar DVD + 30-page Conversation Booklet

This Seminar DVD was recorded in front of a live audience at the 2005 DraperOnline Bash at the World Gym in Santa Cruz, CA. Bill Pearl and Dave Draper, joined near the end by Ed Corney (article 157, Personalities), lovingly and candidly talk for 75 minutes about bodybuilding then and now, revealing truths, expelling myths and offering priceless insights. World-famous bodybuilders (see articles 27 and 118 in our Personalities category for details), Dave has been training for over 50 years and Bill for 65 plus years, they have plenty to say—their answers to questions from the audience are often surprising and always illuminating. Topics covered include their early training, goal setting, feats of strength they’ve witnessed, best lifts, the current bodybuilding scene, steroid downside, cardio training, vegetarian diet,  protein requirements, aging, training partners, favorite exercises, body fat tests, injuries, training to failure, early morning training, improvements in equipment over the years, split routines, nutrition basics, supplements, hypnosis, stretching and more. Ed Corney tells about training before and after his stroke. Added bonuses are slide shows of the Draper and Pearl physiques over the years, and a 30-page booklet, Essentials & Reflections, capturing the two in a private conversation at Pearl’s ranch in Oregon; covers some of the above topics in more depth and other topics as well—especially the importance of positive attitude and having confidence in yourself and your training. Truly an exchange of bodybuilding wisdom for the ages.

Brother Iron, Sister Steel by Dave Draper

Brother Iron, Sister Steel is a private journey into bodybuilding as only Dave Draper, former Mr. America, Mr. Universe and Mr. World, can tell it.  Training techniques, exercise descriptions and nutritional strategies form the book's foundation, but what glues this book together are Dave's personal experiences and insights, humor and candidness, all of which speak to the heart and soul.  The delight in the iron work, the play of the steel and the redefined motivation will have you striving forward to reach your fitness and training goals.

Clarence says this book is a must read for anyone seriously interested in building muscle and keeping it for a lifetime.  To read his extended commentary on this book see article 61, front page.

An Introduction To Olympic-Style Weightlifting (Second Edition) by John M. Cissik

An excellent book which teaches beginners how to do the quick lifts which include the Power Clean and the Power Snatch as well as the traditional Olympic lifts. It has the clearest and most straightforward explanation along with photos showing step-by-step how to properly and safely learn these lifts, of any book I've found. It includes several chapters on how to recognize and correct common technique errors. The second part of the book concentrates on designing long-term workout plans for Olympic lifting. 132 pages, $29.38. + $4.60 shipping (media class) or $6.60 shipping priority. Bodybuilders, Drugs & Sex (A Novel by Tom Minichiello)

We don't usually offer novels, but this is no ordinary novel; it's a novel by Tom Minichiello, who owned and operated the Mid-City Health Club in mid-town Manhattan for many years. Tom's health club was the "port-of-call" for bodybuilders and other athletes visiting New York. He knows just about everybody in bodybuilding. He also has a vivid imagination. Combining the two, he has written a novel about the bodybuilding scene. He calls it a "fantasy." Vic Boff, President of the Association of Oldetime Barbell & Strongmen, calls it "an unparalleled novel projecting the modern bodybuilding scene, the false heroes, the scams, the drugs." We say it's a real page turner. You won't be able to put it down. 296 pages, $24.95 + $4.60 (media class) or $6.60 priority shipping. Foreign postage listed on ordering page. [Size 9x6]

Build Muscle, Lose Fat, Look Great (Stuart McRobert)

First and foremost, it may be the most complete book ever written on building the body in a safe and healthy way. McRobert covers literally everything, thoroughly and accurately. If you’ve ever wondered about something related to training, it’s in Stuart’s new book. If he strays at all, it may be that he sometimes tells readers more than they want to know. That’s preferable, of course, to leaving important questions unanswered—which Stuart strives mightily to avoid.

Topics covered include: muscle-building jargon, anatomy, how to begin training, gym etiquette, handling weighs safely between exercises, using small plates, rep range and speed, variations on core exercises, an extremely detailed 12-month program (discussed below)—and much more. He explains proper performance of basic exercises in great detail, warning against some movements that he considers dangerous. He, of course, covers nutrition, health benefits, aging, recuperation, cardio, fat loss, high intensity techniques, arm and ab training, injuries, and training for women. (He even explores the sex appeal of big muscles.)

Talk about complete: The Program which integrates the massive amount of information in the first 439 pages into a 12-month training plan is COMPLETE! If you have never lifted a weight before and don’t know a gym from a gem, Stuart tells you absolutely everything you need to know. What’s more, he also provides counsel and guidance to help the advanced trainee optimize his or her results. He shows both beginner and advanced how to train productively and efficiently, with safely. It’s a win-win program for everyone.  See Clarence's comprehensive commentary:  StuartMcRobert.htm

Combat Conditioning: Functional Exercises for Fitness and Combat Sports by Matt Furey

Calisthenics, bodyweight exercises: Do you believe they’re outdated and a bit of a joke? Me too – until I discovered the high repetition exercises used and taught by Matt Furey, a massively muscled, super flexible wrestling champion. Furey’s book made me think anew. And when I tried Hindu Squats and Hindu Pushups I became a believer. High repetition bodyweight exercises, done the Furey way, are no joke! They’re tough, an exciting new challenge. Furey doesn’t discourage weight training. Rather, he wants weight trainers to know that these exercises -- which can be done anywhere and require no equipment – will make them more flexible, with greatly improved muscular endurance and functional strength. Interested? Want to learn more? Order Furey’s new book. Explosive Lifting for Sport by Harvey Newton – Book and DVD

Harvey Newton’s book and DVD are excellent complements to our RIPPED Video, which includes pulling movements described and demonstrated here. Clarence first met Harvey years ago, when they were both members of the AAU Weightlifting Committee. Since then, Harvey has gone on to distinguish himself in many areas of Olympic lifting. Among other things, he served as U.S. Olympic team weightlifting coach and executive director of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He was the first U.S. national coach and the first U.S. member of the International Weightlifting Federation’s Scientific and Research Committee. He’s a true expert on Olympic weightlifting and its application to other sports. If you want to learn athletic-type lifting and how it can make you a better athlete in any sport, this book and video are for you. They explain – and bring to life – the safest, most effective learning progressions for the snatch, clean, jerk, pulling exercises, squats and other lifts. Everything you need to know is here, from proper grip to preventing lifting accidents. FLOW IN SPORTS: The keys to optimal experiences and performances
(Susan A. Jackson, PhD, and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, PhD)

Clarence first wrote about Dr. Csikszentmihalyi’s pioneering work on flow in The Lean Advantage 3. “Flow” is the term coined by Dr. C. to describe those times when people report feelings of enjoyment, concentration and deep involvement, or a genuinely enjoyable state of consciousness. It usually occurs when we are struggling to overcome a challenge or achieve a difficult goal. In this book, Dr. C and Susan Jackson collaborate to bring the concept to bear on sports, perhaps the most fertile field for flow. Athletes, coaches and psychologists call it a natural “high” or being “in the zone.” It’s an elusive and desired state of consciousness conducive to optimum performance. The authors explain the thoughts and actions that athletes and coaches can use to set the stage for flow to occur during training sessions and performances. Their insights are supported throughout the book with real-life examples, and quotes from athletes in a wide range of sports. Get in flow, and achieve the most incredible performance state you’ll ever know. (To read more about flow and how Clarence has used it to his workouts, GO Row and Flow)

IRON ON MY MIND by Dave Draper

If you enjoy reading about bodybuilding and bodybuilders, you’ll love this book. It’s a collection of selected essays written by Dave Draper for the extremely popular website he created with wife Laree in 1998. Dave’s photos inspired the readers of Joe Weider’s muscle magazines in the ‘60s and early ‘70s; he was (and is) a bona fide superstar. He and Laree later owned and operated two very successful gyms in northern California, and now devote full time to their training and website. I’m usually not enthusiastic about collections of past writings, they tend to be yesterday’s news, but this book is special. There aren’t many really good writers in the bodybuilding field, and Dave may be the most gifted of them all; certainly the best at expressing his long-simmering thoughts on life and bodybuilding in a most engaging and captivating manner. Who knew that he was storing up his wit and wisdom for all those years, only to be released full-blown week-by-week through the magic of the Internet—and now in this book? Stories, wonderful stories, about pumping iron in his bedroom at 10-years-of-age (at 17, he was yet to read his first muscle magazine), laboring in Joe Weider’s warehouse in New Jersey and later California for peanuts, romping on California beaches with bathing beauties (and abandoned buildings in Brooklyn) for Joe’s photographers, training for years on end, in a drab Muscle Beach dungeon, Gold’s Gym and World Gym with Arnold and the gang, and later his own gyms. What made him do it, then and now? Hint: It sure wasn’t the money and or the fame and glory. He tells you as only he can. Turn to any of the almost 70 essays and you’ll be well rewarded. I started by reading the Preface, Foreword, the first essay (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) and the Afterword; I’m now making my way through what’s in between in no particular order. I hope it never ends. If you’re a musclehead like me, you’ll feel the same way. (For more about Dave Draper, read articles 27 and 60 in our Personalities category.)

Legacy of Iron (Brooks D. Kubik)

Attorney Brooks Kubik, author of the 1996 book Dinosaur Training and a serious student and practitioner of functional weight training, has done something ingenious and new in Legacy of Iron. He wove historical facts into an appealing narrative about weightlifting in America before World War II. Most of the action takes place in 1939, with flashbacks to the turn of the century. The plot is a clever upgrade of the ubiquitous Charles Atlas ad where the scrawny kid takes up strength training and gets revenge on the bully who kicked sand in his face at the beach in front of his girl friend. Kubik’s principal characters are fictional, but the transformation and redemption are accomplished with help and encouragement from legendary Iron Games personalities that most of today’s weight trainers know little or nothing about.

An important book, must reading for anyone who lifts or wants to start.

THE MILLER FITNESS PLAN: Physical Training for Men and Women
By Carl Miller, Former United States Olympic and World Coach

Carl Miller, my lifelong friend, is the best there is at teaching athletic weight training to fitness-minded people in all walks of life. That’s what this book is about: A  fitness plan based on athletic-type lifting movements. Broadly speaking, athletic-type lifts start with the most powerful muscles of the body, the hips and legs, and then incorporate the less powerful muscles of the upper body (examples: push-press w/dbs, power clean). They use the whole body in the most efficient way possible and are at the core of everything from walking to the most complicated athletic movements found in the Olympic Games or professional sports. Carl and his wife Sandra Thomas own and operate what I believe to be the only fitness center in North America (perhaps the world) where the prevailing training philosophy embraces athletic-type lifting as the primary means of fitness training. Carl uses a wide variety of athletic-type movements (barbell, dumbbells, machines and bodyweight) to develop functional strength and flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, lean muscle mass, strong bones, and emotional stability. It's a total fitness plan. Amazingly, for more than twenty years, Carl has adapted and molded this type of training to fit the needs of clients from 9 to 90 (literally), male and female, athletes and recovering couch potatoes, and people with physical challenges. His members keep coming back year after year. They love him, and for good reason. Carl changes their program every six weeks—and cares deeply about each and every member. Want more details? Then read Carl's carefully crafted explanation based on a lifetime of study and hands-on experience. The Miller Fitness Plan is endorsed by Arno Jensen, MD, Tommy Kono, Al Vermeil, Dr. Pat O’Shea, Harvey Newton, and former US and Olympic weightlifting champion Frank Spellman, who taught Carl the Olympic lifts almost 50 years ago. Read the book and find out why.

Reader Comment:

"I have a copy of The Miller Fitness Plan.  And it is the best work.  The flexibility movements incorporated in his program really help reduce tight muscles and improve flexibility.  I find as I get older the flexibility and speed seems to drop more than the strength, so it is good to have a program that combines them all.

I have to say the forearm sit-ups are probably the best all around ab and forearm exercise.  It produces definition in my abs and arms.  I never thought such a simple movement could be so hard after many reps."

Paul Anderson, The Mightiest Minister (Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D.)

"There is no single name in the history of weightlifting and strength which inspires the awe and amazement of Paul Anderson. Anderson demolished world records shortly after he began lifting weights, and went on to become a world champion and Olympic champion, but his greatest demonstrations of strength were done informally and with no attempt to later claim them as official world records. This book authoritatively reviews Anderson's entry into the world of lifting, and his career as the world's top amateur lifter, and takes on the task of providing definitive answers to some of the thorniest questions raised about some of Anderson's most legendary lifts. From Bob People's cellar in Tennessee to the Melbourne Olympics to the Mapes Hotel in Reno, you'll find many of Paul's most celebrated lifts described and documented here, backed up with some facts and photos never before published. You'll also meet the man behind the records, a man who used his physical might as a ministerial tool, and who gave up his lifting career to establish a youth home for boys in trouble." The Strongest Man in Recorded history: A Documentary on the Life of Paul Anderson—DVD

Many of you have read about the legendary Paul Anderson. Now you can see--and hear--him in action in this wonderful documentary. Even though I saw Paul lift five times (as noted in article 38), the never-before-seen photos and movie footage of Paul preparing for the 1956 Olympics using homemade weights in his home and backyard, newsreel footage of his most famous competitions at home and abroad, and speaking before large audiences gave me a new appreciation of his true greatness. Paul was more than “The Strongest Man of the Century”—truly a wonder of nature. He was a wonderful human being as well. He traveled thousands of miles each year sharing his message: love of God, country, and the free-enterprise system. In 1961, he and his wife Glenda established the Paul Anderson Youth Home, which provides Christian rehabilitation for young men who would otherwise be incarcerated. This is the fantastic story of one of America’s greatest athletes--and humanitarians.

Quantum Strength Fitness 2 (Gaining The Winning Edge) by Patrick O'Shea, Ed.D.

Dr. Pat O’Shea, Professor Emeritus of Exercise and Sports Science at Oregon State University and lifetime athlete, worked long and hard to make this second edition even better than the already-excellent original version. I know because I had the pleasure of offering a modicum of editorial advice on two of the four new chapters.

The basic philosophy remains the same: Athletic-type lifting (the snatch and clean & jerk, for example) is the most efficient method of strength training for healthy people – athletes and nonathletes. O’Shea maintains that bodybuilding and machine training do not have the same capacity to develop total-body strength and power. This edition contains a more extensive treatment of athletic-type training for middle-aged individuals and master athletes. The new chapters deal with weight training and cardiovascular health, aging, female athletes and teenage athletes.

Pat O’Shea is one of the world’s most experienced and knowledgeable proponents of athletic-type lifting -- for all ages. This major revision of his book is must reading for anyone interested in building and maintaining athletic power and coordination. For more information about Pat O’Shea and this landmark book, see article No. 5 on home page "Guru of Quantum Strength"  (Go Quantum).

Sandow The Magnificent (David L. Chapman, in hardcover)

A statuette is presented each year to the winners of bodybuilding's top professional contest, the Olympia. Eugen Sandow posed for the original sculpture. This is his biography. The German-born Sandow (1867-1925) was the first bodybuilding superstar, the Arnold Schwarzenegger of his day. The first man to achieve worldwide fame based mainly on his muscular physique and posing ability, Sandow combined his good looks, magnificent physique, intelligence and business savvy to forge a fitness empire. After reading this book, Clarence wrote author-historian David Chapman: "I first heard of Sandow when I was a teenager, but I didn't really understand his place in bodybuilding history until I read your obviously well-researched book.... I loved reading about the character flaws of this great man along with his many triumphs...." A great read, heartily recommended to anyone interested in the rich history of physical culture.

SECOND WIND: The Rise of the Ageless Athlete (Lee Bergquist)

Meet 18 masters athletes at the top of their sport, and learn why so many older men and women are passionate about fitness and athletics. This book is an absorbing account of a growing subculture of Americans who are challenging the notion of what it means to grow old. Clarence, one of the 18 athletes profiled, was tracked by journalist Bergquist for four years and has written a commentary. Here's how the commentary ends:

Lee Bergquist has poured his heart and soul into this book. While his decades as a journalist covered “just about everything but sports,” researching, investigating, and writing this book has earned him the equivalent of a master’s degree in masters athletes. Here’s his concluding paragraph and the bottom line of his master’s thesis: The experiences of these men and women aren’t so different from our own. The human body is a wonderful engine. And it wants to be pushed.

Serious Strength Training (Second Edition, 2003) by Tudor Bompa, PhD, Mauro Di Pasquqle, MD, and Lorenzo J. Cornacchia

This is the second edition of the book cited by Clarence in Challenge Yourself. In this greatly expanded volume, Dr. Bompa, who invented periodization, is joined by nutrition specialist Mauro Di Pasquale, MD, and kinesiologist Lorenzo Cornacchia, BA. As the title suggests, this book is for serious bodybuilders training for strength, muscle mass, and definition. It describes six detailed training phases, with nutrition guidelines for each phase. It goes into more detail on how muscles adapt to various types of weight training than any other bodybuilding book we know. In Challenge Yourself, Clarence explains the difference between volume training and high intensity training (HIT). Serious Strength Training is about high-level volume training, the type of training used by the majority of competitive bodybuilders. The authors claim to have the answers to the questions serious trainers ask. Does it deliver? That’s for you to decide. We guaranty it will give you plenty to think about. 288 pages, 8 ½ x 11, $19.95 + $4.60 media rate or $6.60 priority.

Strength Training Anatomy (2001) by Frederic Delavier (Your illustrated guide to muscles at work)

This beautiful book gives an inside view of the muscles in action during every exercise you perform. The detailed anatomical drawings by the author graphically illustrate both the muscles and the bones. It’s like having an X-ray of each exercise. What’s more, it provides information on strengthening – and shaping – every major body part. The Purposeful Primitive

THE  PURPOSEFUL PRIMITIVE: From Fat & Flaccid to Lean & Powerful (2008) by Marty Gallagher

This book is destined to be a classic; the buzz in some circles may never end. John Du Cane, the head honcho at Dragon Door Publications--they publish Pavel Tsatsouline's books and DVDs and are the company that re-popularized kettlebells in the U.S. and elsewhere--sent us an advance copy and asked for a comment to go on the back of the book. Here's what Clarence wrote:

"Marty Gallagher is a brilliant writer who thinks deeply about subjects he knows and loves. His manifesto/encyclopedia contains a ton of wisdom, one-of-a-kind role models, awesome color photos, and just enough bullshit to make it a truly fascinating read."

You'll find that comment on the back and inside the book (without the bullshit part). Gallagher, who has had over 1,000 articles published and was a long-time columnist for the Washington Post, highlights many of the true geniuses and giants of the strength and fitness world. If you are an aficionado of muscle and leanness (or want to be), this book should be in your library. It will give you many hours, perhaps years, of reading pleasure. It covers lifting, cardio, diet, psychology, famous people, basically every germane topic that has caught the attention of the author's fertile mind. It is indeed a "truly fascinating read."
496 pages, paperback, 10.5 x 8.2 x 1 inch, $39.95 plus 6.60 priority or $4.60 media shipping.

The Heavyhands Walking Book! (Leonard Schwartz, M.D.)

I owe a lot to Len Schwartz. His book Heavyhands, published in 1982, made me aware of the benefits of whole-body aerobics. Simply put, four limbs are better than two for expending calories and burning fat. You can exercise longer and harder - with less perceived effort - using both the arms and the legs. You'll have to go to the library to read Heavyhands because it's out of print, but this book is available, and we highly recommended it to anyone interested in a good mix of strength and endurance in one form of exercise. Go to "Heavyhands Revisited" on this web site for more about Dr. Schwartz and what he calls "strength-endurance fitness." 257 pages $16.95 + $4.60 shipping (media class) or $6.60 shipping (priority). Foreign postage listed on ordering page. [7.5 x 9]

We also carry two other HH products, both DVDs:  Yoga Hands, and HH Walk Plus (see video/dvd page)
