Tribute to Sergio Oliva

Sergio Oliva, three-time Mr. Olympia (1967, 1968 & 1969), died on Monday, November 12, 2012. He was 71.

Known as “The Myth,” many consider him the greatest bodybuilder of all time; he was surely the most genetically gifted. In street clothes or posing suit he was unforgettable—bigger than life in every way. A member of the Cuban weightlifting team, he defected to the USA as a young man barely able to speak English and proceeded to mesmerize the bodybuilding world over the course of his decades-long career.

The bodybuilding community is turning out en masse to pay tribute. It seems that everyone has their own favorite Sergio story. You’ll find many of them in the  “Tribute to Sergio Oliva” on the Iron Man magazine website. Thoughts on Sergio are included from everyone: from Arnold to personal friends to people who encountered him in one way or another—and will never forget it. And photos, wonderful color photos that show Sergio in all his glory. If you’re hearing about or seeing Sergio for the first time, you’ll be awestruck.

My favorite is the black and white photo of Wayne Gallasch photographing Sergio in a wetland outside of London in 1972. Sergio is just standing there semi-relaxed with his hands on his hips, muscles popping out everywhere. Sergio had it all, he really did.

After seeing the photos and reading the tributes, you’ll understand why he was known as The Myth. His was the life of a man from whom legend springs. As he told Jim Manion, President of the NPC, “Baby, you gona see, but you ain’t gona believe.”

Another tribute to Sergio, with more about his intriguing background and place in history and more stories, was compiled by New Zealander David Robson . You'll find it on Bodybuilding.com: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/memories-of-the-myth-greats-pay-tribute-to-sergio-oliva.html

Enjoy and while you’re at it, check out our Products Page for the 150-minute DVD compiled by Wayne Gallasch on the life and times of Sergio Oliva: bodybuilding videos, fitness videos
