VISITOR COMMENTS BELOW

Here I am in my office about to train in the gym. The office walls include Law School and subsequent awards, copies of the ads that ran in Muscle & Fitness magazine along with my monthly column, The Ripped Department. There are a few other things, such as notes from a Supreme Court Justice and other notable people.

*  *  *

The photos below were taken on various training days at our office or home gym. The equipment has been acquired over a lifetime and allows me to alternate my training from week to week allowing better recovery - mentally and physically.

The bar in the middle photo was one of the first pieces of equipment I acquired from York Barbell; using it never gets old.
The dumbbells were made for me by Ed Jubinville whose equipment factory I visited in Massachusetts.
He was known for his muscle control performances.
The Nautilus machine in some of the backgrounds is from the Arthur Jones era.
Carol and I visited Arthur around 1970 on the urging of Peary Rader.

The first photo shows me doing ab work on the large cross-over pulley system we bought from Russ Knipp, the American weightlifter who held nine world records and thirty-four American records.  Carol remembers the first time she met him: he was hanging upside down in our gym stretching out his back.

He was passing through Albuquerque and stopped to pay us a visit. (See him in action below)

(If you have older pieces of equipment, send us photos and tell us how you acquired them.  These stories are priceless.)

The Last Word

An active lifestyle: regular workouts and walking on off days, plus staying lean are successful strategies no matter what your age.  Keep moving and you'll never be sorry.

Onward.  (Take a look at Russ Knipp in action.)

Online photos of Russ lifting at the Munich Olympics in 1972;
he was a short (5'1") lifting machine, here leveraging 375 lbs at a bodyweight of 165 lbs
to win an Olympic gold medal - more than double his bodyweight.

PUSHING FATHER TIME

You keep stacking the wins Clarence.
Year after year, decade after decade you push Father Time to the side.
You not only have years in your life, you have life in your years.
Keep playing the game on offense.

Rich

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER

Impressive, like I see it "age is just a number" in your case.  Your biological age must be a lot lower than 87.  It's a great motivation for us to read on your site and also your books.

Healthy greetings,
Robert

BIRTHDAY THE HIGHLIGHT

Saw this month's articles and your birthday is definitely the highlight!  Hope you had a great day and love the always inspiring training pics!!

WALKING THE TALK

You are a walking advertisement for living a healthy lifestyle based on the sound principles you have advocated for decades.  Great to see you still walking the talk at age 87 and still inspiring others.  The books I ordered last year have been a great help.  Best wishes for your continued good health and happiness.

PHENOMENAL AT 87

Still looking phenomenal at 87.  I still miss the everyday condition/iconic "Bass Pose" though.  Would like to see how aging looks through the years.

IGNORE PASSAGE OF TIME

Good morning Clarence and Carol!

Your photos at 87 encourage me every day.  You have done so much for so many by advocating for an active, tenacious and optimistic view of the future in spite of the indignities of our common condition - the passage of time.

Bart

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know what a continued encouragement and source of inspiration you are. The way you have pressed on despite injuries is really impressive and a great example to us all.

I’ll be 50 in May 2025 and am currently thinking through how to get in my best possible condition for my 50th birthday. Your books and other writing will play a big part in my planning, I’m sure.

Keep pressing on and happy New Year

Andrew

GETTING IN POSITION

Great to see you training.  I am 75 and still at it.  What is the exercise you are doing in one picture - is it a squat on a leg extension machine?

Happy New Year and stay well.

I had a Jubinville Bench and Arm curl machine in the 70s

EVEN AT 87

When I opened the December 1 updates, I was thrilled to see all of the great photos and the narrative descriptions of the various machines and exercises that accompanied your photo spread for age 87.  This was a very clever and creative way to do your annual photo shoot.  The setting for the photos is particularly meaningful for me because I have been in the office gym space at least three or four times, and I even got to do a full workout there with you the last time I was there.

So I am even familiar with many of the pieces of equipment that you are using in the pictures.  The story about the pulley machine that you bought from Russ Knipp is priceless, as are those old but reliable machines that populate your two workout spaces.  That is indeed the beauty of strength training equipment: if it is of good quality, it will easily outlast even the most dedicated aging lifter!

Even at age 87, your intensity during your workouts is very obvious from the photos, as is the size and vascularity of your arms.  I like how you also included the Russ Knipp action photos, showing his amazing tree-trunk thighs and thick arms.  Your making it to 87 in such great shape is a particularly noteworthy benchmark from where I sit, because my own father died at 86, and my mother is currently 86 but moving very slowly.  I hope that this photo montage will bring you a lot of affirming reader comments for how you continue to “walk the walk” rather than merely “talking the talk” with your website and monthly updates.

Dan
